The Journey

My Health Journey Began with Questions

My journey into health optimization didn't begin with a diagnosis or a dramatic event. It began in 2009 with a simple realization: despite having access to more health information than ever before, finding clear, honest, practical answers wasn't easy.

Like many people, I wanted to understand how to actually stay healthy — not just how to treat disease after it showed up.

That curiosity became a long-term pursuit. Over the next fifteen-plus years I read books, listened to podcasts, studied the scientific literature, followed physicians and researchers across multiple disciplines, and — most importantly — tested many of these ideas on myself. Some approaches worked. Others didn't. Every success and setback became another opportunity to learn.

In the years leading up to COVID, my focus shifted beyond nutrition alone. I started paying closer attention to who shapes healthcare recommendations, who funds the research behind them, and why prevention consistently receives less attention and fewer resources than treatment. The deeper I looked, the more I became convinced that incentives matter. Whether in food, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, or healthcare itself, understanding how recommendations are developed is an important part of evaluating them.

COVID didn't create that skepticism — it reinforced it. Watching public health guidance evolve in real time strengthened my belief that institutional guidance should be examined thoughtfully rather than accepted uncritically. Science is constantly evolving, and I believe good health decisions come from understanding both the evidence and the incentives that can influence how that evidence is interpreted and communicated.

As my notes grew into hundreds of pages, I realized they might be valuable to others beginning the same journey. Rather than leave everything scattered across notebooks, bookmarks, research papers, podcasts, and conversations with colleagues, I decided to organize it into a single educational resource.

Health Optimization Hub is the result of that journey — more than fifteen years of personal study and over a year of organizing research, physician interviews, books, podcasts, and practical resources into one place that others can explore.

Philosophy

My Philosophy

I approach health through a naturopathic, holistic, and root-cause lens.

I believe the greatest opportunity to improve long-term health comes from understanding why disease develops — not simply how to manage it once it's already there.

I also believe large industries — whether food, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, or healthcare — operate within financial, regulatory, and organizational incentives that don't always align with long-term prevention and optimal health. That doesn't mean every recommendation is wrong. It does mean I believe they deserve thoughtful examination rather than automatic acceptance.

Many of today's most common chronic conditions share upstream drivers:

  • Metabolic dysfunction
  • Insulin resistance
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Poor nutrition
  • Loss of muscle and metabolic flexibility
  • Environmental exposures
  • Sleep disruption
  • Chronic stress
  • Nutrient deficiencies

Many of these factors can be identified years before serious disease develops through laboratory testing, imaging, biomarkers, body composition analysis, and other objective measurements. That creates an opportunity for prevention long before symptoms appear.

I prefer objective data whenever possible. Labs, imaging, biomarkers, metabolic measurements, and functional testing provide a far better foundation for decision-making than assumptions alone. Knowing where you actually stand is the first step toward deciding what to improve.

Perspective

My View of Conventional Medicine

Modern medicine has accomplished extraordinary things.

If I experience a heart attack, suffer a broken bone, develop a severe infection, or require emergency surgery, I want exactly the expertise, technology, and life-saving capabilities that modern medicine provides. Acute and emergency care remains one of the greatest achievements in healthcare.

Where I believe the system has the greatest opportunity for improvement is prevention.

Most chronic diseases develop quietly over years — or even decades — before symptoms appear. During that entire period there are often measurable changes in metabolism, nutrition, inflammation, cardiovascular risk, body composition, or environmental exposures that can be identified and addressed.

My frustration isn't with medicine's ability to treat disease. It's that relatively little attention and fewer resources are devoted to preventing many of these conditions before they become life-changing.

That preventative mindset is the perspective that shapes this website.

Curation

Why You'll See Certain Experts Featured

Health Optimization Hub is intentionally curated.

The physicians, researchers, and educators featured throughout this site were chosen because their work focuses on prevention, metabolic health, nutrition, longevity, environmental health, and identifying root causes of chronic disease.

That doesn't mean every recommendation here represents scientific consensus, nor does it mean these experts always agree with one another — they don't, and that's perfectly healthy. Science advances through questioning, testing, disagreement, and refinement.

My goal isn't to present a single unquestionable viewpoint. It's to introduce perspectives I believe deserve careful consideration, explain why I find them compelling, and encourage you to continue exploring the evidence for yourself.

Resources

What You'll Find Here

Health Optimization Hub exists to make complex health information easier to understand — and easier to apply. Throughout the site you'll find resources covering topics such as:

My hope is that these resources help you ask better questions, understand your own health data, have more informed conversations with your healthcare providers, and make decisions that move your long-term health in the direction you want it to go.

Closing Thoughts

A Few Final Thoughts

I don't claim to have all the answers.

Health is complex. Evidence evolves. Even experts whose work I deeply respect sometimes disagree with one another.

What I do believe in is curiosity, critical thinking, personal responsibility, and lifelong learning. I believe people deserve access to understandable information, objective health data, and multiple well-reasoned perspectives so they can make informed decisions about their own health.

If this site encourages you to better understand your biomarkers, evaluate the evidence behind health recommendations, recognize the incentives that can shape those recommendations, and take an active role in your long-term health, then it has accomplished exactly what I hoped it would.

Thank you for visiting Health Optimization Hub. I hope it becomes a valuable resource on your own journey toward better health.
